Guests decide whether to click on your listing from a small square photo in search, then decide whether to book from the gallery. Better photos help with both. But "better" has to mean clearer and more accurate, not a different house. A guest who arrives and finds the place doesn't match the photos is the guest who leaves the review you don't want.
This guide covers how to improve your Airbnb photos in a way that stays honest: what to fix before you shoot, how to shoot, how to choose and order your photos, and which edits are fine.
1. Fix the room before you fix the photo
Most photo problems are room problems. Before you pick up a camera:
- Clean and clear surfaces. Put away chargers, remotes, toiletries, paperwork and anything personal.
- Make the beds tightly with the exact bedding guests will get.
- Open every curtain and blind, and replace any dead bulbs so the light in the room matches.
- Clean reflective surfaces: mirrors, glass doors, taps, the oven door.
- Set furniture where guests will find it. Chairs pushed in, outdoor seating out, hot tub cover off if guests can use it.
Only show what's really there. If a fire pit, bike or coffee machine appears in a photo, guests will expect it.
2. Shoot in good light, level and wide (but not distorted)
You don't need a professional camera. A recent phone is fine if you follow a few rules:
- Shoot in daylight, ideally when each room gets the most natural light. Turn the flash off.
- Hold the camera at chest height and keep it level so walls stay vertical. Turn on the grid.
- Shoot horizontally (landscape). Airbnb crops search results and shows galleries in landscape.
- Stand in a corner to show the shape of the room, but avoid extreme ultra-wide shots that make a small room look big. Guests notice.
- Take one wide shot per room, then a few details that answer questions: the bed size, the shower, the desk, the view from the window.

3. Choose your cover photo carefully
Your cover photo does most of the work in search. Pick the image that shows the main reason people book your place (the view, the living space, the cabin from outside) and make sure it is bright, sharp and level. Test it as a small thumbnail: if you can't tell what it is at that size, pick another.
4. Put your photos in the order guests think
Follow the guest journey: cover photo, main living space, kitchen, bedrooms, bathrooms, outdoor space, then extras and the neighbourhood. Use Airbnb's photo tour so each image is attached to the right room, and remove near-duplicates. Twenty strong photos beat forty average ones.
5. Write captions that add facts
A caption should tell guests what the photo can't: "Bedroom 2 is upstairs and has a queen bed", "The hot tub is shared with one other cabin", "Parking for two cars". Captions build trust because they show you're not hiding anything.
6. Edit to fix the camera, not the house
Editing is where honest listings and misleading ones part ways. Good editing makes the photo look the way the room looks to someone standing in it on a good day.
Usually fine:
- Brightness and exposure (phones often make rooms darker than they feel)
- White balance, so white walls look white rather than orange or blue
- Straightening tilted lines and leaning verticals
- Cropping, as long as it doesn't hide something guests would care about
- Balancing windows so the real view outside is visible
- Removing temporary clutter, like a cable on the floor or your reflection in a mirror
Not fine:
- Removing permanent features: power lines, a neighbour's wall, stains or damage
- Changing or inventing the view, the sky or the garden
- Stretching rooms to look bigger
- Showing furniture, amenities or rooms that aren't there
Airbnb's own policy says listing photos must accurately represent the space. We've collected the exact wording in Airbnb photo editing rules and AI policy, in Airbnb's words, and explained the practical line in Airbnb photo editing: what's allowed and what isn't.
7. Run an honesty check before you upload
For every photo, ask:
- Would a guest standing here see roughly this?
- Is anything permanent removed, hidden or invented?
- Does the room look about the size it is?
- Does the view match what's really outside?
If any answer is no, use a different photo or undo the edit.
8. Refresh photos when the place changes
New sofa, repainted bedroom, new hot tub? Update the photos. Old photos of a place that has changed are just as misleading as heavy editing, and you miss the chance to show off the improvement.

FAQ
How can I improve my Airbnb photos without hiring a photographer?
Clean and declutter, shoot in daylight with curtains open, keep your phone level at chest height, shoot in landscape, and pick a strong cover photo. Then make light edits to brightness, white balance and straight lines.
What are the most important Airbnb listing photo tips?
Lead with a cover photo that shows your best feature, cover every room guests can use, order photos in the guest journey, add factual captions, and keep edits honest.
Is it allowed to edit Airbnb listing photos?
Yes, as long as the photos still accurately represent the space. Fixing light, colour, tilt and crop is fine. Hiding damage, changing the view or showing things that aren't there is not.
How many photos should an Airbnb listing have?
Enough to show every space guests can use, usually one wide shot per room plus useful details. Quality and coverage matter more than the total number.
Does Enhance Stays fake or change my property?
No. We enhance your real photos (light, colour, clarity, straight lines) and keep the property exactly as it is.
How much does Enhance Stays cost and how fast is it?
A full listing is £99 in the UK or $129 in the US, delivered within 48 hours, with a walkthrough video at no extra cost. You can start with a free 2-photo sample.
